Larry & Ingrid Machonga
Administrative & Groups Director
I’m proud to be the Executive Director at Camp Awana. My beautiful wife, Ingrid, has also been hired by camp to be the new Administrative Director. We met in 1982 as we attended college at Moody Bible Institute and were married June 1, 1985. I have been doing student ministry since 1984 and have been a youth pastor for the past 35 years. We have done ministry in California, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin. We have three adult sons, Bryson, Jordan and Ryan. Bryson is a Commercial Banking Treasury Management Asst. Vice President for First Business in Appleton. He and his wife Lauren have been married since June 15, 2013 and have given us three beautiful granddaughters, Kinsley Rose, Grace Elizabeth and Mia Marie. Jordan is a Campus Pastor at The Bridge in Des Plaines, IL and has been married to Lindsay since July 1, 2016. They have given us our two adorable grandsons, Brixton Thacker and Clayne West. Ryan is single and working as an Electrician and lives in Austin, TX.
I have both my B.A. and my M.A. from Moody. I am currently completing another M.A. in Biblical Counseling from Faith Bible Seminary in Lafayette, IN. My life verse is Phil. 2:3,4 which says, “Do nothing from selfishness or vain conceit but, in humility, regard one another as more important than yourself. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also look out for the interests of others.” I consider myself so privileged to strive to do that each day in ministry and to lead by example.
Both Ingrid and I have been involved with Camping ministry for many decades and in many forms. We both grew up going to camp since the age of 8 and have loved camp ministry since. While at Moody, we served as camp counselors’ together and loved serving, ministering to kids and seeing incredible life changes in the lives of both children and adults. As a youth pastor I’ve been privileged to bring students and leaders to camp, to be a camp speaker and even run programs at many of the camps we’ve attended.
I’m so excited to serve in this capacity and to be able to do this ministry with my wife as we head into this last chapter of ministry together. We are excited to see all that God will be doing in and through us as we submit to the Lord and follow His leading. We have a passion to see lost people come to know Jesus as Savior (Mt. 28:19-20) and then to be active in Disciple-making as they grow in Him (2 Tim. 2:2). We trust that God will use us to love, motivate and encourage others towards love and good deeds (Heb. 10:24) as He leads and directs our Camp to be all that He’s created it to be.
